Because that is the thing with the Jesus arc: The power of “He died for our sins” rested on the reality that Jesus hadn’t done ANYTHING that lined up with the sins of the people. “Jesus, a sinless man, took upon himself the condemnation for human disobedience, thereby satisfying divine justice~” is the gist of all of that.

It meant nothing to them. They didn’t have the bandwidth to truly comprehend Jesus doing that for them when they hadn’t deserved it.
