Because you actually believed them encouraging your apathy towards those 'less than you' was actually something they were doing For you, out of affection for you.

They immobilize Americans IN their encouraged selfishness and gluttony, and then make them fearfully protective of it by a veiled threat of some outer them being able to take their trinkets away. You've literally had something casually programmed out of your socialization.

This is why all those parroting "Why doesn't someone DO something?!" can't fathom finding a "something" within themselves to "do." That hole has been filled with grout that will have to be chipped away to access.
